Because Alistair wasn't a few-problems dependable nice guy. He was a trillion problems nice guy. He was heavily groomed by the Chantry, was prone to hero worship of figures like Duncan and had to be pressed into becoming King. He had a vitriolic hatred for Loghain that could press him into becoming a depressive alcoholic if he wasn't allowed to kill him. He struggled with topics like religion, the oaths of the wardens and who he was meant to be. All of which gave him absolutely incredible nuance. Being with Alistair essentially meant taking what was still a directionless young man and moulding him into the sovereign of a nation, with the opportunity to be right there by his side. He also had incredibly funny writing behind him. I could go on at length about how he was good, you don't need to convince me on that.
