It's not just about him being a janitor. He has greater ambitions (he used to be into art and science, but his parents never encouraged his pursuits) and is lonely but never took action in making those reality. He spends most of his time fantasizing of what could be or what could have been, instead of going out and doing it, and by the time he realizes that's what he should have done all along, tragically, it is too late (it happens literally right before he dies).
He is not stupid, I believe he actually did read a bunch of books and is knowledgeable. However, he is too old to use that knowledge in a meaningful way. His fantasy in the movie is being his young self again, only possessing all of the knowledge he has now in old age so he can actually use it to gain approval, attract a woman and make a career out of it.
Btw the actor who played his younger self was in his early 30s (i think 32, 33?) when this movie came out. So yes, it is not too late for the majority of you. However, constantly thinking "it's too late for me, I won't even try" puts you in the same mentality as the janitor. If there is any moral to this story, it's to stop thinking about what you want, stop being afraid of making a sacrifices or taking some risks since you have to start somewhere, and go out and get what you want.
