Anons, I got a bit of question.
Let's say that you come across a new Quake engine game or total conversion mod.
Assume it plays like an ideal classic shooter.
Would you be more interested in it if it had graphically:
>a Quake 1/2 look with unfiltered 8-bit color textures and very low-poly models
OR
>a Quake 3 level of detail with smoothed truecolor textures and basic shader effects
OR
>Doom 3 quality with early PBR, dynamic lights, and heavy shadows
I've been thinking about this a lot as I'm working on a couple projects on different versions of the engine. The look of something can really grab or deflect someone's interest, even if it's otherwise exactly what they want.
The Quake 1/2 look is endearing, but it's been tried a lot in recent years and can be misinterpreted as lazy (often not without reason).
Quake 3 style can look amazingly timeless, but only if there is real artistry behind it.
Doom 3 graphics can be great as well, but it's a slippery slope into modernity - only held back by imposed limitations or a strong aesthetic.
