The cuck thing wasn't a... well, thing until V, and V Johnny sucks ass. He was great to me because his story is about the struggles he goes through to keep his made family together, putting up with a terrible leader, a worse underling, politicians extorting him, and eventually having to break into a prison from the front gate to keep them out of trouble. I think it's an endearing story that works with him because he's not perfect, but still got what it takes to run the gang.
His entire character in TLAD was him making the most with what he got, which was never going to be enough in the first place.
