I like that paradoxical aspect of her character. Rarity is vain, but will cut off her own tail just to make someone feel better. She has a lust for gems that's pretty similar to a dragon funnily enough. Which makes sense given her cutie mark and special talent for finding them. But the difference is Rarity uses most of her "hoard" to create things for others. She wants to make everyone beautiful, not just herself.
