MK is what happens when people who think they get why people like fighting games make one but they have no soul. MK was always a spoof fighter just meant to be a meme edgy version of SF2. But for whatever reason it took off with normies. MK kept the naivety of the genre alive by creating games that you could mash your way through. During this time fighting games were getting more complex so people had a home to go to that also had its own edge. It wasn’t till MK9 that NRS wanted to make MK a legit fighter but by then its reputation was that of a meme fighter you play for shits. Beyond that NRS fighting games play like absolute dog shit and the aesthetics are trapped in this early 90’s interpretation of Asian kungfu mythology from the minds of white kids who jerked off to the Karate Kid. It’s also a game that takes the least amount of ideas from its Japanese peers.
