aliens gave a name and identity to the "company", vastly expanded the universe (like how empire strikes back expanded star wars), and gave the queen lifecycle, which opened up tons of storytelling avenues (such as aliens: phalanx).
colonial marines is the cherry on top of the sundae, and people have far gobbled up too many sundaes without cherries since 1986.
