To hold on as long as he can before the inevitable political and economical collapse, pretty much. Even if the war stops right now there's no way the russian economy will be what it was before 2022 for at least a decade or two, and it wasn't good before either. The loss of a massive chunk of the young workforce and mass migration of people with education will be Russia's undoing in the future. Russians are like cattle, but I don't think there is anyone else besides Putin who can keep the federation going at this moment, because he got rid of anyone who might've had. It will be like the constitutional crisis of the 90s all over again.
