Halo will never be as popular as it was for two simple but important reasons.
Halo didn't have the "competition" it has today, and everything Halo offered in its time, many other games simply already offer.
Think for a second when Halo's golden age was? From 2001 to 2007, Halo simply had no competition.
What other games of that time offered an experience on a similar scale to Halo?
Campaign, multiplayer, ground and air combat with vehicles, incredible AI, music, art, level design, a good story, fog, theater, the vast amount of game modes, gameplay, and many other things that improved with each release.
Removing or leaving Sprint out won't bring back the millions of players that Halo 3 had in its time because they're simply playing something else today. Perhaps if the franchise hadn't been violated by 343i and Microsoft for so many years, the damage wouldn't be so serious today, but don't be fooled; you can't go back in time.
