In the hide and seek game, we basically see him embrace the idea that he’ll do anything to save his girl. He goes so far as to cross the moral line into killing innocents just to raise the chances that the girl he loves survive. But instead they drop the ball by having him try to save himself over the kid.
What they should have done is take that motivation to its logical end. He ends up having to kill Gi hun, not because he wants to save himself, but because he simply can’t accept even a 1% chance that his child might die. That should have been the real conflict. Gi hun, on the other hand, misunderstands him and doesn’t fully trust that he’s putting the baby first. So they end up in opposition, not because either of them is selfish in reality, but because neither can risk believing the other will put the baby above themselfs. When in reality, they both would.
