Escaflowne absolutely rocks, and it absolutely does have some elements that were geared towards a female audience, but it wasn't gay. You're supposed to self-insert as Hitomi and be indecisive about wanting to be in love with Allen or Van.
You should just watch it because the show is fucking awesome regardless of that anyway.
