Tails doesn't tie him down. Fooling around with his best buddy who can keep up with him and help him adventure isn't restricting him. Please understand how Sontails is anti-wind, especially when gay relationships can be far more fickle and free spirited than straight ones. The neutral ending to Sonic 2 is quite literally Tails saving him on the Tornado to the tune of a love song.
