It felt unfinished in places, but it was still the best of nusona and the last game to clearly reference the events of the old games. The life sim elements were actually fresh since they were new and worked into the main themes about the game being about making the most of your life before death.

The thing is, despite its success, Persona 4 was a quick cashgrab made using reused assets like most PS2 Atlus titles around then, it's obvious from interviews where they talk about the development, Hashino even went as far as saying they didn't write a timeline of when each event in the game took place on the calendar, despite the other games having a big document dedicated to what events happen when for P3 and P5, so they had some trouble because the daily life events were pulled straight out of their ass as they went along.

They never expected it to be such a success, that's why Persona 5 took so long to come out despite being so underwhelming, it couldn't be "just another Persona 4" even though it pretty much was in the end anyway.
