I would definitely keep the speed of the flying mech very low. You don't want actual realistic speeds. Check out games like Robotech Battlecry or War for Cybertron to see how they handled their flying modes. Both to keep it controllable for the player, and for the ease of dev you don't want them zooming around too fast.
