Mongols wouldn't be shit without metallurgy. And modern warfare requires a much more sophisticated infrastructure. The Mongols couldn't hold on to anything outside the steppe and eventually that got conquered too. Imagine how many Chinese and Muslim mining operations went to supply the Mongolian hordes with their metal tools. Not to mention wood.
