I'm an American traveling here. The Chinese Malaysians can have an elitist mentality, I always found them closed-off. Tons of Singaporean Chinese girls visit Johor Bahru, and basing yourself there would allow you to cross the border if you want to escape the strictures of Malaysia. Johor is one of the least Islamist states in Malaysia desu. I hardly ever heard the call to prayer there, while here I have to put in earplugs at 5:30 AM because it's so fucking loud and goes on for a long time as well.

Thailand is significantly cheaper than Malaysia in every respect, and arguably offers a superior visitor experience. Two things Malaysia does better - air conditioned trains and urban nature preserves.

Yeah it's unappetizing, but it's the national dish of Malaysia, so visitors are required to pretend like it's delicious.

Very good point. Same with Philippines cooking. Herbs make all the difference in the quality of the flavor.
