They work against drones, but probably have little to no effect against any type of guided missile. This shit is to stop drones from just dropping a grenade on top of the tank and fucking up an inordinate amount of shit, something (relatively) easily rectified with cage armor. It works against RPG-7 warheads aswell, mostly by fucking up the shaped charge before the contact fuse can go off.
These field modifications are crude (still much nicer than russian shit) and almost 100% had no engineer looking at it to optimize size and spacing of mesh, different orientations, etc... This is why there is so much variation in regards to cage armor (cope cage or otherwise).
