I usually call them stuff like that, since there's not really a good name for them since "skinwalker" technically means something else. So usually "nasty forest critters" or "evil innawoods gribblies" works.
It's my friend's encounter so not really my place to tell the story. I've had some funny experiences in the woods myself but really nothing that exciting overall.
