The Benton McKaye Trail and the Pinhoti Trail are both great east coast trails.

I think it is fine to agree to a final destination and split up the group on the trail. I am an experienced outdoorsman. I do not like fast walking. I walk slowly.
No one should go alone though. Everyone should have a partner at minimum.
