I would have preferred Lex Luthor to resemble Clancy Brown's performance in the cartoon, but the whiny Elon Musk nerd fit the story and Hoult's acting was on point. I also thought the pocket universe was a bit too over-the-top scifi for a first movie, but again I have to admit it was very well-incorporated as a plot device.

Overall it was great. Reminded me of the Sam Raimi Spiderman movies because it was so unapologetically faithful to the source material. It's very classic and timeless. Superman is a paragon of virtue. Lex Luthor is arrogant, evil, and hates Superman more than anything. I love how this dynamic underscores the central message of the film. At the end of the day, we should all strive to be good people. No amount of intelligence or nuance will ever supersede that simple truth. A good person like Clark Kent will take it upon himself to learn from his naivety, because he genuinely want to do the right thing. Whereas intelligence without a moral compass risks chaos and destruction.

A minor contrast to Superman, the film also depicts more relatable, "get shit done" heroes like the Justice Gang and more specifically Mr. Terrific. Don't really agree with the critics who insist this stuff is too expanded universe for a first movie. In fact, I think that criticism sort of reveals a superficial understanding of MCU's problems. MCU typically just shoves in side characters for "hype and aura" moments that detract from the central story whereas the EU side characters in this movie were specifically chosen because they support the story which is still very focused on Superman. It's a bit like how Andor features a ton of obscure Star Wars characters but they all make sense. Of course the Empire's law and order crackdown would be delivered by Wullf Yularen. Of course Mr. Terrific would serve the role of the tech genius for the good guys. It doesn't come at the expense of Superman's traditional pals either. Lois and Jimmy Olsen have important roles.
