Dead start? The older edition rulebooks give a nice overview in just a handful of pages. The OG Housebooks and the early novels get you the backbone of the universe. The technical readouts tell you about the mechs. Then you go from there. What units do you like, timelines all that.

There's also lore videos and stuff but they get skewed in different ways. Sarna is a prertty good wiki for quick reference too, especially about where to find the actual information about stuff in the trove.

I will just say it is an absolute mountain of paper. Battletech has had new fluff added since 1985 so 40 years CONTINUOUSLY. I've been reading since I was in 3rd-grade in the 90's and I still have a pile of paper to get completely caught up. So you're probably not going to get every detail. Don't sweat it. Dig into what you like at your own pace.
