3 wasn't a masterpiece but I believe you're thinking of 2
In 2 they're all trapped in a base with bugs that burrow in people's brains and take them over, i.e. they don't even need bug effects it's just actors playing Body Snatcher. Notably the main character is supposed to be Clancy Brown but they couldn't afford Clancy Brown back, which sort of feels like you couldn't afford Eric Roberts. $7 million budget, 33% RT, 3.6 IMDB
3 is supposed to be a return to form but it's also dogshit, its only saving grace is that it resembles 1 more than 2. T'Pol from Star Trek Enterprise is the main character and she's guiding a small group of crash survivors across a bug infested planet, sorta like Pitch Black but during the day. They get the big hype moment at the end when they're cornered and totally doomed and Casper Van Dien shows up in badly CGIed power armor that's supposed to be more like "real" Heinlein armor. $20 million budget, 43% RT, 4.3 IMDB rating
3 had one memorable thing going for it, the new Starship Troopers theme song, and a sorta clever plot conceit where the guy who sings it is a coward and a traitor but after he dies all of the surviving heroes simply agree without much hesitation to lie to the public that he fell heroically in battle because he's such a useful recruiting tool
