Funny thing, he WAS originally supposed to be a globe. Unicron was based off an unproduced design from the Japanese "Microchange" toy line which is where half the original Transformers came from, specifically Megatron, Soundwave and the other ones that turn into handheld objects instead of vehicles, as well as Bumblebee and the other mini cars, which were originally meant to be based on "Choro Q/Penny Racer" toys rather than actual cars. The idea was that they were robots made by tiny aliens to spy on humanity by disguising themselves as household objects like radios and toys. Amusingly, the original Megatron toy wasn't meant to be a real gun but a piece of Man from UNCLE merchandise.
