It is human instinct. Human are social creatures, that is how the hierarchy in the tribe is established.
There was some documentary about monkes doing the same, they mess around demanding attention when they want to go up the ladder. And eventually a bigger monke might have enough of them and kick their ass. In modern human society, the feedback of beating them up is illegal, so they continue to act like this.

This instinct is in everyone. You just like being alone because you have bad experiences and keep losing in the social game.
I hate people who act like that, but I noticed even I had similar feelings when I broke my leg. People act completely differently towards you when you have crutches, they put you more on a pedestal. Eg I extended my leg on the tram more than necessary so that people see, and they could have sat in front of me, but didn't out of consideration.
I saw this in one of my relatives too, who is completely normal otherwise. When she had a baby, she once admitted to breastfeeding in public on purpose, and she was annoyed nobody has called her out. She was hoping people would call her out, and the bystanders would come to her rescue.
