I was curious what the Super Bowl record for most penalties called on team were, and it was on a team going against Tom Brady
Those first two Super Bowls the Patriots won with Belichick-Brady were:
2001 - Pats were 3-0 in the playoffs with Brady going 1 TD, 1 INT across all 3, and was Jimmy Garoppolo-tier in all 3 games (Pats D held every opponent to 17 or less despite facing two of the most elite offenses in the NFL) and, in the SB, the Pats D scored just as much as Brady did (Ty Law 50 yd Pick Six of Kurt Warner)
>after that SB, pic related was the SI cover
2003 - Pats were 3-0 in the playoffs, the first two games, Brady was Jimmy G-tier again, with the Pats D holding both opponents to 14 or less, and both were two of the best offenses in the NFL, including the Colts with Y3 QB Peyton Manning, who were a Top3 offense in the NFL that year but had a weak D (#20 scoring D)
But in the SB vs the Panthers, who had a solid D that year, that was the first time Brady played well in a playoff game in his life....but then you look at how no team in SB history had more penalties called on them then the small-market Panthers did in that game (12 for 73 yards) and it makes you wonder how much the refs were trying to prop up Fraudy
Pic related is the 1st time Brady ever made the cover of SI, right after he won his first SB ring. As you can see, the sports media was desperate to hype Brady as something special, so it would be no surprise if the refs were trying to do the same
The only other team in SB history that had as many penalties called on them as the Panthers did in that game was a team 48 years ago before we were all alive
