I agree Denji's reaction came out of the blue but then again I guess it's supposed to be a mental attack.
I do think that it's partly just Denji being gaslighted by some fucked up Devils. They're all kind of piling up on him and trying to crack him down despite being infinitely more fucked-up than he is.
