Picrel + China is a map of every culture worth engaging with to this level. And most of them in the area of worthwhile business see English as the prestige language so you don’t *need* other shit (assuming you’re not doing something retarded like moving to the country and then trying to get hired at 7/11). This is most pronounced in Europe, where they also don’t seem to look kindly on Americans learning their TL. However, in East Asia, even if your business is conducted in English, they appreciate the gesture of someone having some competency in their languages. Some Chinese for example hold the belief that foreigners are too stupid to learn Chinese, especially reading, so a foreigner being literate is particularly impressive. With the Japanese their text is so difficult that apparently the staff of the only non-japanese person to ever be elected to the diet (a white guy who speaks fluently and has been a citizen for 30 years) constantly has his staff acting shocked that he can read. However, the Japs are a little more aware that their language is just more alien and that there are few secondary speakers, while the Chinese more overtly see foreigners as just dumb.
