Present-day Southern Italians still reflect those ancient demographics to an extent. Around 30% of all contemporary Italian patrilineal haplogroups are of combined Near Eastern and North African ancestry (half J2 and half E1b1b, respectively), their highest frequencies being found among the populations of the southern regions, so the results of genetic studies pretty much align with what we know about the Roman Empire and Mediterranean history in general.
