You're asking perfectly sensible questions which have no answer because it's just made for the fuck of it and in order to look cool.
I also didn't get why mechs in lelouch of the rebellion glided in rollerblade like fashion but it grew on me because mechs racing makes more sense than slowly lumbering about with all that weight. It depends on the show and what vision the writers have for how the robots look and behave like.
