i dont know where the specific yearning for that taste comes from. bg3 for example is held back immensely by its mediocre artstation character design.
it feels like the characters in those games (im including owlcat in here) have the basics down, they're just missing that extra oomf or soul that really makes a character stand out in a good way that you'd see in a good jrpg. its not like gear design offsets this because gear in these games is often uninspiring or garish in its own way.
