>But if they betray this mercy, you have the blessing of God to attack them back
This is pure fanfiction. There's not a single part of the Gospels which defends it. The only thing Jesus says about vengeance is leaving it to God.

This cope also doesn't apply to the other two examples given in that exact same section; if someone robs you of your cloak, give him your tunic also, and if someone kidnaps you and makes you walk a mile with them, walk two miles instead. How does giving a robber more stuff than he even wanted mean that you're just trying to show restraint?

The point of the lesson as Jesus teaches it is that you should respond to violence with compassion, up to the point of allowing yourself to be killed, which is exactly what Jesus himself does with the Pharisees. If you think that's nuts, I agree, and that means you're not any more Christian than Richard Dawkins.

There's lots of rationalizations like this for Jesus's line about turning the other cheek, and all of them pretend the next two lines about giving away your tunic and walking two miles with a captor don't exist. There's always some complicated rhetorical backflip for why consenting to getting slapped ackshually didn't mean being a cuck but meant other thing we swear. It's because most people only know the other cheek line and don't know the passage continues because they've never read the Gospels.

The most comprehensive way to cure yourself of Christian delusions is just to read the Gospels and remember that Jesus means what he says he means. You won't have any respect for him by the end of the story.
