>Bellsprout
Vine Whip! Sleep Powder! A lot of desirable basic Grass traits in one package. Not much else to say, other than it being an interesting player choice in when you choose to evolve it. Do you want to wait around for a stone from Picknicker Gina, or do you get it from Kanto, and at what level should you commit to it? Up to you.
>Zubat
Not nearly as much of a pain to train as in past generations, as in gen 4 it gets Bite and Wing Attack somewhat earlier. This makes it an actual strong candidate for the team even from the very earliest point. Zubat's stats suck, but the moves mitigate that until evo time. Crobat is like a dream compared to the likes of Pidgeot.
>Dunsparce
For the point in the game you get it, the stats are that of a behemoth. Catch a Dunsparce, head to Violet Gym and watch the birds melt in the face of your divine Rage. Stats fall off later, but there's always value in status like Yawn and moves like Rollout and Headbutt. You might even bring this guy to the endgame.
>Rocky
Onix sadly sucks compared to Geodude, but a Rock/Ground is still a Rock/Ground with plenty of good early MUs. Only include in the team if you really like Onix named Rocky, or if you're planning to have it evolve.
>Mareep
Everyone fucking picks this and it's obvious why. A tanky electric mon that spreads paralysis and packs decent elec moves is a unique flavor among electric types and there's not many other choices in Johto if you want one. Ampharos can clutch so many battles with its defenses.
>Hoppip
I am biased to call Hoppip really cool but I'm a weirdo who likes stalling the CPU to death with Leech Seed. Your mileage may vary. You will likely prefer Bellsprout, you plebeian.
>Wooper
Wooper's SpAtk sucks so it takes a while to get going (until lv20 exactly), but Quagsire is legit and of course we must remember it gets EQ naturally.
That's all(?) the pre-gym 1 guys. I might have more to say about later choices but does anyone care to hear it?
