I don't agree that he is.
He portrays him as a vulnerable child who just didn't know better. There's no accountability here because it's framed in a way where you're supposed to pity him.
Compare that to something like Bojack Horseman. They show him fucking up all the time and, even if he has redeemable qualities that keeps him sympathetic, they absolutely emphasize that he fucked up and that he needs to own up to his actions.

Maybe I misspoke.
I don't think he needs to be "punished" insomuch as there needs to be some kind of accountability in how he's written. But there just isn't; the story infantilizes him so the audience can go "awww poor Denji."

I agree but they TRY to do this whole "your actions have consequences!" theme, and it just doesn't work because he is written to be a perpetual victim.
Maybe I just want the story to be something more interesting than "sad boy gets kicked when he's down by literally everyone he comes across." idk maybe I'm wrong for thinking that.
