Everything North of the Rio Grande was sparsely populated. The Spaniards took advantage of preexisting infrastructure in Aztec and Mayan lands.

The Spanish gained so much wealth from the Incas, Aztecs, and Mayans that they didn't have to work (why you get Siesta). The English had to make wealth through labor instead.
