Start with a simple character like Sophitia, Mitsurugi or Astaroth. Learn just a few moves at first, the point is to be able to throw them out quickly using pure muscle memory. Familiarize yourself with universal game mechanics. Learn what beats what in every situation (eg. horizontals beat sidestep, verticals beat crouch, throws beat standing guard, lows beat standing guard etc.). Maybe learn a combo or two afterwards.
