The practice of using a fork in your left hand and knife in your right hand to cut your food and then swapping hands to hold the fork in your right hand to put it in your mouth actually originated in France. I guess the idea was that it forced you to eat more slowly and made dining more of a social occasion. During the 19th century, basically everything French was in vogue in the US. Even in old western saloons of the time, French cuisine was dominant everywhere. So we adopted this stupid idea from the frogs even though they were even getting sick of it themselves by that time and it just stuck around as part of our American etiquette for some reason. As an American, I just keep the fork in my left hand and the knife in my right hand through the meal. Nobody taught me one way or the other but that obviously makes the most fucking sense rather than juggling your silverware throughout your entire meal. My point is don't put this one on my fellow mutts because the French are the ones who came up with this nonsense in the first place.
