I've worked in market research before, and I can tell you with a degree of certainty that this is bullshit, and at best a case of purposefully worthless research. Basically all market research I ran was very obviously rigged by the way the research was ran. Extremely common in the market research industry. As an example of the kind of nonsense that goes on in market research, I've run surveys where we required the surveyed person to only answer with a set of given answers, and only gave them the option of responding to something positively. Internally, our surveyors could accept negative answers, but only if the surveyed answered with a hyper-specific option that the surveyors weren't allowed to tell them, and generally did not match the verbiage of the rest of the proffered answers. So when we told them we couldn't accept their answer of "very negative" or what have you because they didn't say the magic words of "I greatly disliked this" which they were not told they could say, they would either curse us out or hang up themselves, either of which would cause the survey to become invalid and tossed away, therefore the result of that question would come out as "Consumers were 100% positive on this issue." I shit you not. The reason corporations do market research is not to actually benefit from the results of it, but rather so they can show shareholders and consumers that the thing they are doing that obviously nobody likes but happens to be profitable, is "actually beloved" by consumers.

If a corporation ever tells you that something that is obviously unpopular is popular, or vise versa, you can solidly be assured that it is complete bullshit.
That said, whether or not rosewater knows the truth of this is unclear. Frankly he is a tricky enough bastard that I am sure he does, but a lot of corporation does not necessarily know that the market research is bullshit.
