TQ: How do we fix Magic's writing?
>>95976306 (OP)>TQWe stop sarkhan saving Ugin. Or we stop the mending.
>tq
Integrate UB with magic story. Have teferi in midgard, elspeth in the earth kingdom, Winter in the Shire, Ugin on the tardis. Then they'll start adding mtg characters to these popular IPs and magic will be saved.
>spend all my removal on rhystic studies
>have no cards
>my opponents draw cards anyway
>For Mirrodin! but it's an aura
Has anyone compiled the Edge leaks anywhere?
>>95976378who cares lmao all they had to do was make endless space MTG but they couldn't even handle that
>>95976306 (OP)>TQ>How do we fix Magic's writing? We can't. But hypothetically the writing could be improved by removing activist writers and returning the story to the level of people living on a given plane.
Cut the meta-narrative, cut the capeshit, let go of needing a Face of The Brand(tm) at the center of everything. Just focus on writing decent stories about individual worlds and the characters that live in them.
>>95976354>play with fags>game sucks
Thirty (30) starting life is objectively superior to fourty (40)
>>95976435Importing because I'm retarded
In your experience how prevalent is cheating in commander? New to the game but played my third game last week, dropped all is dust and was told by two guys running zombie decks that swamps are colourless. Checked it later and doesn't seem to be the case. Been quite a few other cases like with people claiming creatures aren't permanents etc that I'm surprised at given the four player format. inb4 just messing with a newbie, they pulled this shit on eachother too. Maybe it's not malicious and people genuinely don't read or understand rules but still surprising.
>>95976510Lands are colourless.
>>95976510You'd be surprised how many people play magic but never learn the rules, and/or never learn how to reference the rules. The amount of incoherent, emotional "rules" arguments I've had to sit silently through because normoids refuse to be taught keeps me up some nights.
For the record, creatures on the battlefield are permanents (but are not in other zones) and lands (such as swamps) are colorless.
>>95976510Lands are colorless
>>95976510>https://mtg.wiki/page/Comprehensive_Rules>https://magic.wizards.com/en/rulesThere's the spoonfeeding for you. I think the wiki is easier to navigate, personally.
Go read rule 202.2 for the land issue, then see if you can prove that creatures are permanents using your own research.
Unironically bring back the novels. Even WAR had a coherent plot. Who the fuck is letting these fags jump from red wall, to cowboys, to space. Any actual writer would tell them to go fuck themselves. Garfield is probably rolling in his bed
>>95976530>>95976535>>95976573Swamps are black you absolute mongoloids. LOOK AT THE FUCKING CARD.
question, Ive been told that I was doing this wrong so I was wondering: If I have Judith, Carnage Connisseur and Harmonic Prodigy, then play a Lightning Bolt and choose imps, does Harmonic trigger and let me choose a 2nd time with lifelink and deathtouch or am I stuck with two imps cause Im locked in?
>>95976636The entirety of magic lore needs a hard r reset.
>>95976647
>>95976652Harmonic doesn't "trigger", it's a static ability.
Harmonic instead causes *Judith* to trigger twice.
What do you think having two Judith triggers implies for you choices?
Each choice in independent, you can have whatever combination you want.
>>95976306 (OP)>TQGo back to block sets(at the minimum do two sets per plane so you can have conflict/resolution)
That's the only issue. Planes and storylines feel flat because there's no stakes since every set has to both set up the plane, the conflict, and the resolution
>>95976652It isn't a copy effect, it just triggers again so you can choose a different option
>>95976510>>95976647I'm new but my understanding is that Swamps produce black mana but are colorless because they have no mana cost.
Scryfall says the same too
>all is dust>Each player sacrifices all permanents they control that are one or more colors.>Lands have no mana cost, so they are colorless unless an effect states otherwise.
>>95976647It is colourless. Go look up rule 105.
You are confusing a cards actual colours, and it's colour identity, which are two different things.
>>95976647Read the rules. All lands are colorless. The mana symbol on a land shows you what color mana it produces, not what color it is. The only land that has a color is Dryad Arbor and that's only because it's also a creature.
>>95976690This post is a perfect example of where we're headed as a civilization. Please don't forget this example anons.
This, right here, is the AI future.
>>95976690>AI answerGO LOOK IN THE FUCKING RULES, I EVEN GAVE YOU THE NUMBER.
>>95976691dryad arbor is green because it says it's green not because it's a creature
>>95976691No, it's green because of the line "Dryad Arbor is green". Not because it's a creature. In future reprints the rules line is replaced by a color indicator - that can also define the color of a card.
Consider, by comparison, Awaken. The lands do not automatically inherit a color simply by becoming creatures.
>>95976720Incorrect. It is a green creature. Plainly and simply. Newer versions of the card do not state 'it is green' because it is an intrinsic quality of the card and not and effect.
Just got back from a 10 hour game session with the boys.
After 4 games I've determined Zidane is the most fun Final Fantasy commander.
>>95976737that's green because it says it's green (the little pip) but not because it's a creature
>tfw surrounded by pseuds who can't perceive a simple fact like the color of the card border
Never mind the GIANT COLORED MANA SYMBOL in the middle of the FUCKING TEXT BOX.
>>95976748The color of the card didn't necessarily indicate the color of the card
>>95976748Text box ain't color. It is color identity, but not the color of the permanent itself.
Ask yourself this question: if Swamp is black, why is Swamp black? What is making it a black permanent?
Understand why permanents have colors, and you will begin to comprehend why lands are colorless.
>>95976748>Gets proven wrong with cited sources>Doubles downGo outside and cool off anon
>>95976748That symbol denotes the mana it produces, not what color it is.

>>95976690>AIAIs hallucinate, anon... Furthermore, color is not the same as color identity. "Color identity" is a deckbuilding constraint for EDH, and yes the basics have color identity, but this has no effect in-game. "Color" is a game mechanic and is based around the mana cost of the permanant, or special markers/effects. Kenrith is the color white, for example, but has the color identity for all five colors (because of his activated abilities). A creature having protection from green would not stop Kenrith from targeting it with his +1/+1 counter ability, because Kenrith is not green.
>i was only pretending to be retarded
All these replies to obvious bait, is this all you people do all day?

Center it on the inhabitants of a plane, planeswalkers are weird freaks who show up and complicate things.
Should you use some sort of chess clock for commander games? Whenever you do your turn or react to something it goes off your time. Some games are absolutely miserable solely because some people take way too long.
>>95976876MtG has always been a refuge for the midwits with delusions of grandeur, and EDH especially so.
Ask yourself, how many MtG players do you know who are also really into competitive abstracts (Chess, Go, etc)? Not many. MtG is designed around making the player feel smart without being smart.
Do smart people play MtG? Of course, but that's a different question.
>>95976896Correcting game rules is much better than a meltdown over 2d pedophilia like last thread. Even if its bait, it's at least on topic.
>>95976890I hear the excuse that people play certain commanders (usually with partner) due to color choice but then why not just run kenrith FACT
>>95976898Doesn't actually seem tenable with the priority system. It'd be like playing on modo but worse.

is it always morally correct to target the green player more than others?
>>95976913It could work. The player before you end his turns and pushes his turn button. It's your turn and your time is running. When someone wants to react during your turn, they push their reaction button and their time is running. When they are done reacting they push that button again and it's your time.
People would have to constantly smash buttons on a phone or tablet and it's easy to mess up. But it would work with the priority system.

Last thread's nonretarded discussion made me consider Y'Shota for an Artifact aggro deck. Simulacrum Synthesizer loves 3 cost artifacts and you can Tutor it up with tons of 3+ cost tutors like Reshape, Fabricate, Diabolic Tutor, etc. Turns 3 drop mana rocks into burn, draw, and constructs!

Awful card all around, way better in the 99 of a creature focused deck with a speed sub theme
Oh yeah, and she sucks too because mono red has 14 cards with start your engines and only 8 or so fit in that archetype. So chances are you need to rely on her to start the speed, which means sheโs not attacking until turn 4 even if youโre on curve at which point everyone has a chump blocker out if you try to go commander damage.

>>95978476My varchild and calamity neither dont do either of those. My kellan doesn't either. Closest i have is dragonhawk goblin but thats only cause I figured it was the easiest way to get a critical mass of 4+ power creatures
>>95977680I don't think Hazoret is a very good commander because his effect is underwhelming.
I assume, if I'm reading the effect correctly, you can use his activated ability to target something with power 2 or less and then pump it up ridiculously and swing with it. So you're looking at aggro.
But you have no engine on board (no pun intended). Hazoret doesn't draw you cards or give you pay offs or anything, and there's already spells in red that can make something unblockable for a turn, so putting it on a stick isn't all that useful.
Start your engines is also just a garbage mechanic unfortunately. Ironically it's very slow because it's a hard once per YOUR turn. So even though Hazoret could come down even as early as turn 1 with the right hand, and has haste, it's not actually going to do anything itself for a while.
If your friend is set on using Hazoret in the command zone, then just generic red pump spells is all you need.
But I would seriously try to convince them to play anything else
>Feather the Redeemed>Arabella Abandoned DollBoth Boros but much better than Hazoret
If it has to be red then try
>Zada Hedron GrinderLastly, adding to what was said here:
>>95978476>>95978546I would highly recommend
>Ashling Flame DancerHer ability is fantastic and very thematic. Your friend sounds Timmy as fuck and I think telling him "you will BE the fire" will get him excited, and there's enough Spike crunchiness that it will ween him onto playing shit that's effective over time.
Basically her discard draw effect is not a "may" so it will happen every time you cast or copy an instant or sorcery, meaning there's always choices to be made about what to discard. Madness spells will make the discarding less feels-bad if he's very new.
Her 2nd effect can synergize with Repecussion or Basilisk Collar for very consistent damage
And her 3rd effect means if he plays cards in the right order he can sling a lot of spells.
>>95978557>I had told the table what they do when they came onto the board one and two turns earlierOkay? And clearly he forgot.
Again, what do you think you gain from seizing advantage from what you know to be a mistake? It's such an insectoid mindset.
At the tables I play at, I'd say at least a couple times a night there will be an interaction like
>"okay I swing X at Y">uhhhhhhh you know if he blocks and his creatures die, you'll have to sac everything on your board right?">"oh shit- okay, then I don't do that"I don't know what else to say about it, I'm just so confused about the kind of person you have to be to let players make what you know to be a mistake they would not choose to make, in a casual format.
>>95978655If you have to be reminded what a creature does 3 times in 5 minutes you legitimately be might be too retarded to play this game.
>>95978527>takesiesbacksies in the big 25
>>95978589>Had a 10 minute long argument with someone playing this arguing the emblem would bring back treasure tokens
>>95976956>is it always morally correct to target the green player more than others? It's correct to target the green player a bit more than you might be thinking initially. Remember that there's certain things each color does that are "its thing," those different things register as different amounts of threat in your brain. Blue draws cards, red does damage, that sort of thing.
In terms of "opponent aggro," damage, removal, sticking threats, and maybe countering spells all set off alarm bells, but ramp doesn't tend to -save something huge like boundless realms- but it's still "the color's thing."
If you want just a list of "categorically target in this order by color" with no other context, I'd say
BUG >> RUG > UG > jund > RG > bant > BG = GW (enchantress or hatebears) > naya > WBG (lower because grave hate sets them back for a while) > GW
late because I had something to do, reply anyway because autism.
>>95978655Taking advantage of your opponents mistakes is a large part of all games. What an absurd mindset you have you may as well just role play a EDH game with your friends
>>95978685Sounds like your problem for playing with retards then. But even if that's the case, again why are you trying to dunk on retards instead of helping them? Are you so deprived of wins that you can still get satisfaction from knowing that you only won because you let an opponent do something they clearly didn't intend to do and then told them "no takesies-backsies"?
I couldn't. I want to win games where everyone played as optimally as possible, even if that means pointing out they're making a mistake.
>>95978711You may as well just roll a dice to see who wins in that case.
>>95978709>Taking advantage of your opponents mistakes is a large part of all gamesI don't disagree, but there's a difference between making a mistake because of hidden information and making a mistake because of forgotten information.
I mean, the test is simple:
>is this player doing something they otherwise absolutely would not do if they were aware of all the information currently on the board? If they're just playing shit in the wrong order because they're not very good, or have poor threat assessment, that's on them. If they're literally about to step on a landmine because they've misread or forgotten something, where is the satisfaction in winning because of that?
I bet you're the kind of person who won't remind people of their triggers. Why the fuck are you playing a casual format? Can't hack it in competitive 1v1s is my guess.
>>95978722>NOOOOOO ENCOURAGING OTHERS TO PLAY OPTIMALLY IS TOTALLY RANDOM!!!!!! LETTING PEOPLE FORGET ABOUT THINGS SO THEY ACCIDENTALLY LET ME WIN ISN'T RANDOM AT ALL!!!!!How is others playing well making your game more random and not less random?
So yeah, what I'm hearing is you don't win when others play well so you claw for wins from obvious accidents to boost your own ego. That's very sad anon.
A lot of words for someone who refuses to read the board state.

>>95978734Nta, but I don't thinking a bad thing to do to remind someone of an effect before they do something stupid, and in a casual game let them retract a spell/action. Then again, I playwith a lot of newer/casual players and want to help them grow

>>95978377UB and SL is the fortniteification of magic
It started with marvelization, with cold snap tying up some loose ends and then time spiral block being the sendoff and break from the old. Lorwyn block was originally intended to have planeswalkers in it, but the design space got a bit bloated and there were some other issues with adding them in then. But you can really clearly see a complete change of direction with Lorwyn block from everything before it.
WotC started doing this trend for a while of limited-run precon products outside of the normal ones. It really began with Duel Decks but then evolved into a regular-release of "party formats" like Planechase, Archenemy, and coopting EDH into regular Commander releases. The interest in older cards (again, thanks to commander/EDH and in part some of the historical interest produced by Coldsnap and Time Spiral) spurred on the From the Vault line.
The hype around these was in part caused by special promo cards included with each that included reprints of (often much) older cards with updated frames and the card text matching oracle text as well as sometimes new art. Then it moved to being giga expensive limited releases.
The rest is history, we did this to ourselves. I am guilty of, back in my more-retarded days, wanting and buying some of these. I got bit by the Phyrexian Negator hype from the Ph vs Coalition duel decks. I apologize for my hand in contributing to this bullshit.
The other thing is that Arena makes it so any autist can sit at home endlessly testing decks for broken combos against hundreds of other people. It's accelerated the evolution of deckbuilding to the point R&D can't keep up, hence banlists exploding after it was released, infinite combos being found regularly within standard, and so on. It makes WotC too much money to kill, but it's going to burn their game out faster.

>>95978904>>95978907Satyrs are all male if wotc wanted to do this they should've made it something else.
>>95978915I confess they should've totally wasted their time making the female version (Faun) or referred to her as that in her title maybe like Faun of Revelry but Roman Satyrs are female, Greek satyrs are all male. You are gay. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.
>>95978904The original sketch has so much more SOUL lost by the paintover. Much more clear, much more expressive, much more focused. I'm not really a fan of the facial structures but I can set my taste aside to say it's actually pretty good as-is.
What the fuck is the art department doing?
>>95978939Dawn Murin, the amazing art director for the set, then politely informed me that there's a few TINY rules regarding depiction of alcohol and related excesses in game that are to be sold to minors in the US that I (from the land of Oktoberfest) was not quite aware of. So I had to come up with a new kind of party in the background. Luckily, I love fruit, and now, everyone on Theros does too!
We wanted to make sure the main fun thing about the image - her being the heart of the party and him getting caught in it with no harm intended - came across as hilarious, excessive, but not disrespectful to anyone involved. So we made sure our headlocked dude's expression couldn't be misunderstood as staring at her boobs and dialed down the spring-break-ness of her outfit by a few percent. We both wanted to make sure the image could be as wild as possible while still passing legal review, and talked a bit about the lessons learned from [[Triumph of Ferocity]] - so there was a lot of thought given to the presentation of her character and the power dynamics in the image. With that, I had a solid drawing to take to final:

I very often find the enchant tutors going for the double treachery line on dicier boards. That can bring you up to a lot of big blockers. Your commander independent of being powerful is just a 4/4 flying vigilance, so it's favorable protection.

I think Akoum Hellkite is probably too little damage for the input of playing lands, 1 target, 1-2 damage. Roaming Throne making it 2 triggers and Twinflame making it 2-4 damage is neat but that seems like way too much work for that little damage.

No more stupid stories about sets. Vaguely allude to happenings within it, because the most 99% of Magic players will ever know of Magic lore is the art on the card and the flavor text. The vast majority of players don't care about the story. Stop printing shit that directly references the set's gay writing, printing cards with titles like Tyvar's Stand or Karn's Touch is dumb as hell. You can still have symbolic characters that are carried by design and brief flavor text to appease the lorefags but other than that keep the story vague, put out stellar and evocative art, and let players fill in the story themselves.

>>95980234>Global ArtifactTechnically already exists
>>95980273>he wasn't around to play original EDHI honestly feel bad for modern EDH players
I've come to realize the game just isn't fun.
What I actually enjoyed was playing with friends. Playing public games is like playing public D&D (very fitting, given how both are WotC products). All it does is expose you to how people are genuinely just terrible at the game to the point they can be spoonfed every advantage and still flounder it, then instead of learning how to play better they'll just blame their opponents for playing an "OP deck".
>Yeah I curved out Rhystic study but you played Izzet and had a win condition that took 20 mana and 4 cards when you had no mana-positive effects, so I'm just going to direct everything at you the entire game even while I'm getting raped on board by Grave Pact and Burglar Rats being recurred twice a turn.
Yeah okay maybe I'll go play cEDH since it's allegedly the format people are trying to win-
>Kinnan player trying to act like a smol bean and wastes literally ten minutes trying to politic instead of passing priority because he overplayed his hand and got fucked
Even here, the general seems to be in a perpetual state of new/casual players that just don't understand basic abstraction of game concepts. I see people online asking for "spicy Breach lines" in their casual decks and the result is just a cEDH line that swaps Thoracle for Jace. No matter what I think is "fair/fun" there's always someone else who is new enough that doing an Underworld Breach loop is novel instead of played out. So much shit in this game gets defended with the most pisspoor excuses like "well you're just not appreciating the casual experience" as I see someone tutor for their infinite in bracket 2 and somehow it's okay because it "just" makes them infinite mana instead of winning the game so it's not "really" a combo.
It feels like games are more exercises in mental gymnastics than actually playing the game. It's a contest to see who can bitch out the other players while defending their own deck. I just don't find this fun.
>>95980480I miss playing with bad cards
>>95980490I do. People still whine and mismatches are constant. It might be better than bracket 3 but it's not up to the threshold I would begin to consider as potentially fun.

>>95980566Some Vorthos basically explained why last thread. Essentially the writing is shit and the characters are unattractive. Characters will disappear for years at a time with no hints to if/when they're ever coming back so it's very hard for people to get invested in personalities when R&D will take a shit on them anyway if they want to use the characters as a plot device to rework a plane.
>>95980598>And it's more tenuous but the entire Spider-Man UB is getting UW'd on ArenaAbsolutely zero motherfucking reason to not print those cards I'm gonna be so mad if they're Arena-exclusive

>>95977423I've worked in market research before, and I can tell you with a degree of certainty that this is bullshit, and at best a case of purposefully worthless research. Basically all market research I ran was very obviously rigged by the way the research was ran. Extremely common in the market research industry. As an example of the kind of nonsense that goes on in market research, I've run surveys where we required the surveyed person to only answer with a set of given answers, and only gave them the option of responding to something positively. Internally, our surveyors could accept negative answers, but only if the surveyed answered with a hyper-specific option that the surveyors weren't allowed to tell them, and generally did not match the verbiage of the rest of the proffered answers. So when we told them we couldn't accept their answer of "very negative" or what have you because they didn't say the magic words of "I greatly disliked this" which they were not told they could say, they would either curse us out or hang up themselves, either of which would cause the survey to become invalid and tossed away, therefore the result of that question would come out as "Consumers were 100% positive on this issue." I shit you not. The reason corporations do market research is not to actually benefit from the results of it, but rather so they can show shareholders and consumers that the thing they are doing that obviously nobody likes but happens to be profitable, is "actually beloved" by consumers.
If a corporation ever tells you that something that is obviously unpopular is popular, or vise versa, you can solidly be assured that it is complete bullshit.
That said, whether or not rosewater knows the truth of this is unclear. Frankly he is a tricky enough bastard that I am sure he does, but a lot of corporation does not necessarily know that the market research is bullshit.
>>95980607That does explain things. Named "important to the story" characters suck and the one off creature you like and build a deck around will probably never have anything else related to it again. And this game doesn't really have the generic cards that almost any deck can play and get attached to the way stuff like Yu-Gi-Oh does with Zeus or whatever. Odd how having a story makes the game less likely to get fan art. I wonder if they had just done away with written story and instead had implications and hints here and there of a larger world in flavor text or card art things may have gone over better.
What is the most fun number of colours for your commander to have?
>>95980619I could see them selling them as a Secret Lair since they're going to have to pay artists and have someone reword all the fucking cards anyway. But I can't imagine them releasing a set twice (Double Feature, lol) because they're basically competing with themselves. Anyone who bought the cards first time isn't going to buy them again just for new art, and Wizards keeps saying "fuck anyone who doesn't like UB"
Personally I think the latter thing is a marketing lie they're telling. I think they're going out of their way to not compromise with people who dislike UB in the hopes that they will all cave and eat the slop they're given. UB fatigue will hit one day, and then suddenly Wizards will start trying to win back all the people they shit on when UB was their flagship.
>>95980598>just UW'd the D&D movie Secret Lair like 2 months agoYes, and that took two years and they only did it through some limited event. And they haven't printed anything else. They already said Arena is only getting it because of difficulties in releases. Presumably that means they can get print rights but apparently likenesses in digital media is some other bag? Either way that's not really word that we're getting it in paper. I'm not saying it wouldn't be profitable if they did to universes within, but clearly Wizards doesn't want to do it and they're set on this point.
>>95980674>But I can't imagine them releasing a set twice (Double Feature, lol) because they're basically competing with themselveswow it's almost like it was a completely shit idea in the first place, whoda thunk??? There HAS to be some corporate-level market research that shows "even if we cannibalize our own sales the total sales will outpace the Arena-only sales". There's no way some C-suite MBA bro didn't pitch that idea
>>95980367Where do you think you are right now
>>95980660That does explain a lot. I always assumed they would choose hyper specific customers to gather their response from that they knew would positively react to anything they did and used those warped results to express the larger market. Like only ever interviewing long time customers who regularly buy everything. Guess they have other tricks as well to bloat the numbers they want.
>>95980661Maybe, but even YGO has a handful of iconic monsters that routinely get supported while Magic ties support more to colors and play patterns. We don't see "Niv-Mizzet" support. We see "Izzet (color) spellslinger" support which has generally just been an uncohesive mess thematically even when Magic was sticking exclusively to vaguely fantasy-themed sets, because the only thing tying all the cards together is gameplay function.
>>959806732-3 is the sweet spot for me it gives more variety in your options while still being narrow enough to chase a definitive gameplan
4-5c usually loses its focus and becomes generic goodstuff piles or worse tribal
mono colour can be fun but it also feels super narrow and i think the only mono colour decks ive ever enjoyed have been blue or red
>>95980675>clearly Wizards doesn't want to do it and they're set on this point.Hasbro execs don't want to do it. It's all marketing bullshit. UB was a billion dollar idea, literally selling cards as ad-space.
Currently Wizards is trying to create the illusion that NOT liking UB is a fringe position, they keep saying how making UB legal in all formats wasn't opposed enough so they just did it, demand for UW isn't high enough so they're not going to do it, Final Fantasy is the best selling set of all time even though WPN stores all claimed to have received less stock of it than they did of normal sets.
In the not too distant future, players will grow tired. They will be tired of the endless hype train, they will be tired of IPs they don't care about getting entire sets, they will be tired of the declining quality and increasing prices- and when that happens WotC will suddenly come round on Universes Within, they will start framing it as giving players more choice and more opportunities to get their hands on otherwise limited cards etc etc
Whichever way the wind blows, Hasbro execs will point their dicks.
>>95980674>UB fatigue will hit one dayI'm going to be honest man, I don't see this happening. Especially when the alternative is more of the "Magic" they've been putting out. With the kind of shit they've been doing over the years and characters no one gives a shit about and the course it's been going, I almost feel UB will end up preferable.
>>95980720>I'm going to be honest man, I don't see this happeningPeople said the same thing about Marvel-fatigue in theaters and it definitely hit. Helps that Disney starting shitting out inferior movies over and over but the hype machine is 100% gone
>>95980720>I'm going to be honest man, I don't see this happening. This year is Avengers 1, my friend. The UB slop train has only just left the station. There will be years of it to come, but the burnout is inevitable. No matter how popular something is, you can't just keep doing it forever and even if it's just by sheer over-exposure players are going to get bored of UB and suddenly Wizards will be pushing in-universe only sets as a breath of fresh air. Screen cap this and get back to me in about 5 years.
>>95980720UB fatigue will also never "set in" because of the fags that will buy something just because of the property they use. There's a huge fanbase for Squibbly Jim and the Jerkoff Boys, so the precons and pack will sell and some may stick around for "Next Thing" while others will just be happy with wetting their toes on a card game and being done with it.
>>95980727But that's movies? Movie interest comes in waves. People lose interest in themes and the theme of supers was and is waning. I'd think cardgames are a different beast, They aren't selling you something you have to sit through for two and a half hours doing nothing. It's card art and mechanics that are play pieces.
Do you notice how when a bunch of anons post their decks, only Swordbro gets replies? Makes you think.
>>95980710What you say is also a part of it. It is pretty easy to target invested customers only. As an example of that, we had done surveys targeted at people who had bought a specific brand of car, and asked them their feelings on that brand, to which the result was positive, because how many people are gonna spend tens of thousands of dollars on a car brand they don't like?
It is full of that shit, these examples are really just the most blatant ones. Sometimes the manipulation is much more subtle, screening for how they feel about related ideas to what they want tested, and then if those come out negative, to simply terminate the survey and never even ask them about the thing in question.
>>95980731Hell, maybe you are right. There are planes I'd like to see revisited that probably won't as long as every other set is UB. But the way i see it, there is also just the possibility that the game fully invests in becoming a western version of those crossover card games like Union Arena or Weiss Schwarz. Games kept afloat by their crossovers but with the stability of being such a massive almost too big to fail name in the card game market. I could see a world where the fatigue never comes in because the new player base the crossovers bring in keeps things afloat. Sure, a good chunk of them may leave after enough sets not from the thing they like come, but the influx of new players and the few that stay every set will keep things afloat. Or at least that's my guess of things.
>>95980736>But that's movies? Movie interest comes in waves.>Consumerism is entirely different depending on the mediumLol. Lmao even.
Human nature doesn't change. While something is new it's exciting, the longer it goes on the less appealing it is.
You cannot name a single product that has stayed exactly the same for 3 decades without changing its gimmick or its advertizing strategy or trying to capture a different audience.
There will be books on marketing at your local library anon, they're usually free to join. Highly recommend you take a look at one some time.
>>95980749>I could see a world where the fatigue never comes in because the new player base the crossovers bring in keeps things afloat.People who come for "IP I know" will lose interest when it's "IP I don't know". If you're marketing to players who show interest based on whose face is on the card and not the game mechanics, when they don't like the face they don't like the game.
>>95977423Maro is 100% correct when he says this, the people who want within printings probably make up less than 5% of the playerbase
>>95980566There is more fanart than you think but less than you expect from a game of this size

>>95980770You are falling for a marketing strategy that is intended to make the less profitable option sound fringe and therefore unconsciously you will distance yourself from it.
If there is any market for UW why would a company not cater to those people?
One of the most baffling things about the whole UB saga is watching how incredibly anti-consumer people get, desperately trying to suck off a corporation
>"I think UB is bad for the health of the game">"REEEEEE IT MAKES HASBRO A BILLION DOLLARS!!!! BEST SELLING SET OF ALL TIME!!!!! GUESS YOU WERE WRONG CHUD!!!!!"As if the health of the game is measured in sales. Fucking psychos.
>>95980712>the only thing tying all the cards together is gameplay function.True. That's probably a large part of it. Effectively leaves us with a function vs function situation and it's harder to get attached to just a function rather than a character and group. If they had a few connective themes characters that worked together between them I could see some gathering around them and doing art for them.

>>95980607Correct. Final Fantasy writing was never stellar and the games weren't great to play even in their prime but Square was top tier at character design. Characters like Tifa have simple but memorable designs and are drawn as absolute semen demons so they gained a fandom. Wizards has always had terrible generic fantasycliche designs and they're far past their prime for character concepts, Loot is ample proof of that. The only Wizards adjacent character that's caught on with any sort of popularity in the last 10-15 years is Shadowhart from BG3, and even then she was created by Larian and she's just mildly popular.
Add in that every set is a disjointed mess that takes place on different planes where a bunch of the long running characters might not even show up and you have a recipe for disaster. No one gives a fuck about MTG outside of its card game aspect. It's a 30 year old franchise, one of the most popular TCGs in the world, has millions of players, and yet it has always had absolutely as close to zero pop culture impact and footprint as possible. League of Legends went from being a WC3 mod to having a highly successful show. The cannibal incest siblings from an indie RPG Maker tier game (The Coffin Of Andy and Leyley) have more fan love and pop culture impact than Magic has ever generated.
It's not wonder WOTC is relying on UB to try and generate hype for their product. They've consistently failed to do so themselves for 30+ years now.

>>95980896>we couldn't possibly cater to all our consumers!!! we only have limited bandwith okay??? do you know how expensive it is to print on cardboard??? and we have to pay our artists $1000 whole dollars per card!!!!>now buy this Secret Lair exclusively themed around left-handed single-mother refugee women of color working in STEMYou fell for the marketing, anon.

>>95980901>>these games weren't good btw even though they still have ritualistic followings even 30 years laterYes actually. If appeal to popularity meant anything you'd have to concede that The Minecraft Movie was a cinematic masterpiece.
Final Fantasy was a game series in a genre that wester developers hadn't had much success with. It was novel to a western audience, stood out compared to other games, and now the boomers who are pathologically nostalgic for their childhood continue to talk about it. What more is there to say?
>>95980949yuo nkow waht I maent.
>>95980445doesn't have the global type that ensures there can only be one
>>95980987shit is that what it means? It was before my time, I thought "global" meant it affects all players and not just your side of the battlefield
>>95980994Yes, when you play Concordant Crossroads, if there's any global enchantment on the field it gets destroyed.
>>95980997>>95980987My bad, I meant WORLD enchantment not global. Please sudoku me at your earleist convenience.

>>95977773It's crazy how Rashel is blatant AI generated art but nobody gives a fuck anymore.
>>95981019Dalakos, Crafter of Wonders
>>95981044There's so much ugly in the art that I think most just passed it by completely and didn't bother stopping to realize just how much is AI too. Also probably helped by it's release being a limited event too.
Im baking new, we're almost at 500 that's good enough.

>>95980901>>95980895>>95980887>6>magicite and custom character building locked away until hours into the game>dozens of characters>4 are heads and shoulders better than the rest>7>materia system>potentially interesting combos>takes hours upon hours to master just one to create copies to make combos with>all the best materia is locked away in the last 25% of the game making grinding even more tedious and useless>8>draw magic>junction it to improve your stats>actively punished for casting magic because it lowers your stats>summoning GFs can sometimes take literal minutes just to get through an animation>9>fucking trance>10>7 characters>can only have 3 on the field at a time even though you can actively swap them out>if 3 on the field die the other 4 just stare at their corpses and give up>sphere grid makes anything but 3 characters irrelevant and flavorless anywaysAlso, for all the above:
>99% of the time you will just use the Attack commandThe gameplay of golden age FF was not good boom booms, even by 90s standard. It was a series built on the 90s anime boom, lack of console competition for RPGs, great music, and top tier aesthetics. There's a reason why Square abandoned the menu system in favor of making FF's pseudo-ARPGs as soon as the 2000s brought in actual competition and the anime boom cooled and they had to rely on making games people actually wanted to play (which they mostly failed to do: post FFX games have never had the same reception or popularity VI-X had).
>>95981129>dude appeal to popularity in cringe>THEN THEY STOPPED MAKING THE GAMES PEOPLE LIKED AND MADE SHITTIER GAMES>this is why those games are bad3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10 are still among the best written and greatest jrpgs of all time.
>>95980896do you have proof it's fringe or is it just something you feel is true?
>>95980896>WOTC has limited bandwidthHAH! That's why every new rare and mythic rare gets an alternative artwork these days?
Besides, just because, say, 70% of your customers like a product doesn't mean you only sell that one product. If you're big enough the other 30% are still a lot of potential profit.
>>95977370I kinda want to build the RG Barret with most of the living weapon stuff, especially the For Mirrodin! ones. Is it the best? Almost certainly not. But I think it could be fun.
>>95978969The liquids give it a much better sense of movement (especially the raised goblet in Gallia's hand, compared it to the fist in the finished version and you can clearly tell the difference in sense of motion), and the satyrs dancing and drinking in the background makes for a livelier party, with their hands on the shoulder of the one in front really giving the impression that they're dancing together in tune with music rather than the random scattering of people in the final version. Gallia is also somewhat curvier, giving her a more distinct outline compared to the dude.
