People of medieval Europe were aware of a precursor civilization, partly due to the fact they were literally tripping over the stone constructions and roads of said civilization. The fantasy of medieval people in awe of a grand ancient civilization is so common in fiction because it is literally our entire society for over a thousand years.

The Japanese are fascinated by European history because their closest analogy to ancient Rome, classical China, turned into dog-eating-dog savages right in front of their eyes. The idea that you can view the descendants of the precursor great civilization, and find them productive and high-minded, is intoxicating to Japanese authors.
