It's been a long time but I remember reading a paper that implied that children start drawing behavioural cues from a masculine figure in their life as early as 3-4 years old. The paper also noted that a child explicitly need a mother/mother figure from birth up until that 2-4 year threshhold, but past that point the mother's impact was less important than the father's in ensuring a more behaviourally developed child. I couldn't find the paper in question, but did find something that is related and also further illustrates your point.
