Superman should be a shapeshifter with three forms: his base Kal-El form, his Clark Kent form, and his Superman form. This elegantly solves two problems: why a Kryptonian looks so similar to humans and why Clark Kent goes undetected (he looks nothing like Supes). His base form could even be a secret that Lex uncovers to turn people against him.
