It's counterintuitive but it's worse when it comes from fellow developers. If you deliver a full experience in your demo nobody's coming back for the full game. They got their value for free already. Gamers are lazy. You have to bait them, build investment, then blueball them so they lay in bed thinking about your eventual full game for months. It's excusable you don't know this if you were just ordinary gamers, but as developers you should know this, and I'm starting to doubt your competence.
