Steven hugging his Pink self was more about him seeing the truth while also showing the truth to White Diamond proving that he is him and revealing that her world's foundation is as fragile as her sense of self
It also can be seen as Pink Diamond finally standig up against White and choosing to be Steven which adds another layer to it
But in this it just seems like a pretentious "love yourself because... wholesome and heartfelt!!!" Then again pixar movies are knwon for their one super tear-jerker scenes so maybe they just wanted to reach their tear quota.
