I recall this was about canonically deconfirming a popular homosexual ship, which probably mattered more to 18+ fans. Not into MtG, so I might be misremembering.
That said, I've read Rain of the Ghosts, Weisman's OC novel, which definitely felt like it would be much better geared towards young teens. It was not bad or anything, but for an adult reader, it felt just slightly too naive with plot development. I did not buy the followup book.
