Agreed, The Others did it far better. Showed some genuine humanity at the end but without turning into Hallmark schlock because the overall theme is still tragic and forlorn. There was no evil house or even really any evil characters, but the existential bleakness of it all still made it that much more unsettling.
It stays with me even now while I basically forgot Hill House after it was over.
