Le living evil house is always a retarded copout and never scary, the whole conceit of a haunting is that it's about the dead that can't rest. Not only that but they made it basically a "live forever/get out of oblivion free card" since the house doesn't actually 'digest' anything, it just keeps souls in the house, souls that are free to actually live happy with friends/family if they want as implied by the show itself.

Agreed, The Others did it far better. Showed some genuine humanity at the end but without turning into Hallmark schlock because the overall theme is still tragic and forlorn. There was no evil house or even really any evil characters, but the existential bleakness of it all still made it that much more unsettling.
It stays with me even now while I basically forgot Hill House after it was over.
