I do get it from a gameplay perspective even if I like Grubs designs for the most part too.
Like look at Beatrix. If you know nothing about the character you can still tell she's related to Zeta in some way because of the armor. What her design doesn't tell you is that she or more accurately her sword has time powers. That's where fighting game and gacha game character designs differ. Fighting game characters have to convey a *lot* of who the character is just from their visual design, gacha games do not.
The silver lining is that you also get an entire moveset to sell the character's personality too. So you can still convey that Beatrix is an overly aggressive retard when she fights through her moves even if the design is just "hot chick in bikini armor".
