because real world combat is more visceral than in a sci-fi setting. mowing down krauts with a PPSH is going to be more satisfying than pewing at a cartoony alien with a laser gun.
and speaking as someone who plays wargames like Combat Mission, replicating real warfare provides deep gameplay and tons of material for missions.
really this argument only works with games like Six Days in Fallujah, which had the pretense of being an "interactive documentary" then refuses to specify who died in the March 31st ambush. may as well cut any attempts at being historical and leave in the CQB if they arent going to treat it with respect.
