You don't really need him per se, he just makes the early game easy.
There's a 4* curse user that you're bound to get soon enough and he's like, serviceable for battles with curse weak enemies iirc.
There's also Yaoling who's a qt. I didn't pull her though so I don't know how good/bad is she.
