Epicureans weren't really atheists, in fact a lot of the philosophy is based off the uncaring nature of metaphysical entities and is more concerned with virtue than it is with what may or may not have governed the world. The Romans and people of the Mediterranean were genuinely highly superstitious people, they also lacked a clear pantheon, and they also had regular Atheists. Epicurean thought, much like Stoicism, has little to do with religion and more to do with how to act at any given station in society. People make this same mistake with Nietzsche, essentially assuming that his work is an ultimate refutation of religion when in fact that is a soundbite to his much larger discussion.
